Whaling ship captain Bering Joy (Lionel Barrymore) takes his grandson Jed (Dean Stockwell) along on an expedition, intent on teaching the boy life values, which ensues a battle of wills between the captain and First Mate Lunceford (Richard Widmark).
Set in 19th century Massachusetts, shot on location at Seal Beach, California.
