Title:
Friendly Persuasion (Original screenplay, presentation script)
Publication:
Glendale, CA: Allied Artists, 1955
Description:
Revised Shooting script for the 1956 film. Based on the 1945 novel by Jessamyn West, written for the screen by Jessamyn West, Robert Wyler, and Michael Wilson (though only West and Wyler are credited here) and starring Gary Cooper, Dorothy McGuire, and Anthony Perkins.
Interestingly, Michael Wilson, who was ultimately granted sole screenwriting credit on paper, did not receive a mention in the film due to having been blacklisted. Wilson was finally given the credit by the Screenwriters Guild nearly 40 years later, in 2002. Gary Cooper plays against type in one of his greatest roles, portraying a Quaker who decides against his family's wishes to join the Home Guard during the early days of the Civil War. When confronted with violence he faces not only his own passion for being a soldier, but the dictates of his faith. Nominated for 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Director.
Brown Allied Artists' leather binder, stamped with the title and credits for William Wyler and Allied Artists on the front board. 163 leaves, mimeograph duplication. Pages Very Good, toned at the edges and with some small chips at the fore-edge of the last two leaves (though still reasonably supple); binder Very Good plus bound with three gold brads.
