- The five-piso coin pays tribute to Ferdinand Marcos, the kleptocrat President of the Philippines
- The immortal Jose Rizal, "Father of Philippine Independence," is depicted on the one-piso coin
- The first Philippine painter to win international fame, Juan Luna, is featured on the twenty-five-sentimo coin. Another national leader was Francisco Baltasar, commemorated on the ten-sentimo coin
- Melchora Aquino, known as the "Mother of the Revolution," is honored on the five-sentimo coin, minted with an unusual scalloped edge
- Square with rounded corners, the one-sentimo coin portrays the warrior chieftain Lapulapu who led the resistance to Spanish conquest in the 16th century

The Philippine coat of arms appears on the reverses of the fifty, twenty-five, five and one-piso coins. The reverses of the four smallest denomination coins carry the seal of the Central Bank, symbolizing the nation's economic development
