This charming, hard-to-find 7” H. American-made pulp paper lantern form first shows up in the 1940  wholesalers catalog B. Shackman & Co. of NY. (See facsimile in last photo). Originally fitted with a German-made tissue face insert to allow candlelight to glow through. The insert is long gone but included is a modern repro JOL face printed on paper , for you to cut and fit to recreate a similar appearance. The lantern is approx 5” W . Original wire handle is missing.
Condition- Scuffing and paint loss to toes, edges and portions of head. A 1.5” crack and 1.5” area of pulp loss to right side of head. There is a 1” crack and separation to left rear of head at top. Top rim is frayed, with some paint loss. Some pulp fraying and small tears to feature cut-outs. Remaining airbrushed paint is tight and bright. Body and base are solid and study. Minor dust and darkening in crevices. Please check photos to verify condition.
Returns accepted only if item is not as described.
All-in-all a rare and displayable piece, especially when head is filled with moss or crinkle-paper. A very similar pumpkin head man lantern is featured on pg. 18 of  Campanelli’s 1995
