    Description

The first issue of these light blue chambray shirts to the Navy was reportedly in 1901 and they were used by enlisted sailors through the WWI period. Try as we did, we were unable to find any other illustrated, surviving examples to compare. And we are not aware of this pattern ever having been reproduced, although the classic style and material would certainly have appeal among vintage and military buffs.
This example is well worn but still excellent. It has the so called chin strap of the strap and double button to close the neck as typical of the period. The buttons are interesting, being likely of dyed horn with the depressed centers painted gray. The two on center of the placket were missing and we replaced them with presentable copies, though not perfect. The original button top of the placket has started to de-laminate as seen.
There is a wear through hole on the right elbow and wear on the cuffs. Rectangular contract label is missing but stitches remain.
As expected this is a relatively small sized shirt: chest from pit to pit 22 inches, sleeve from center back at collar to end of cuffs 29 inches, length from center back at collar to hem 28.5 inches.
We have never had another, and never will. But if we can find some suitable fabric we may well make a replica to wear!
